CLIMATE CRISIS
A RACE WE CAN WIN
ABOUT THE CLIMATE CRISIS
EVIDENCE: How do we know climate change is real?
Global Temperature Rise
The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 1.18 degrees Celsius since the late 19th century, a change that is primarily due to increased carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and other human activities.
Warming Ocean
The ocean has absorbed a large portion of this increased heat, with the top 100 meters of ocean showing warming of more than 0.33 degrees Celsius since 1969.
Ocean Acidification
Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30%. This increase results from humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and more carbon dioxide being absorbed into the ocean.
CAUSES: Why is climate change happening?
Scientists attribute the global warming trend observed since the mid-20th century to the human expansion of the "greenhouse effect." Which is a warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space.
EFFECTS: What are the effects of climate change?
Global climate change has already had noticeable effects on the environment. Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted, and trees are flowering sooner.
Effects that scientists had predicted in the past would result from global climate change are now occurring loss of sea ice, accelerated sea-level rise, and longer, more intense heat waves.
There are also mental health effects on individuals like anxiety and depression levels. The effects of our changing climate can cause economic uncertainty, job insecurity, extreme and volatile weather patterns, and displacement.
SOLUTION: What is being done to solve climate change?
There is no one magic solution to combat climate change -- it will require many solutions. Almost all the solutions that exist today rely on humans changing how we behave and shifting the way we make and consume energy. The necessary changes span technologies, behaviors, and policies that encourage less waste and more thoughtful use of our resources.
Sustainability involves acting now to enable a future where the environment and living conditions are protected and enhanced. We must implement sustainability practices by managing environmental risks, threats to our communities and adjusting our current behaviours.
What can I do?
Download EcoDrive’s My Impact app (scan the QR code on the screen) and join the HKOutsider Foundation Community, where we will update you on projects, competitions, prices, and activities to take the steps to measure and track your personal plastic usage and reduction efforts.
Spread awareness about the climate crisis so together, we can create a behavioral change and societal support for the actions needed to tackle this issues.
If you or your organization want to be part of the change and get involved with our CSR (corporate social responsibility) programs please contact: adventure@hkoutsider.com
